Student Organization Spotlight: Child and Family Development
The CFDSO focuses on serving children and families in need.
The Child and Family Development Student Organization is the perfect place for students with a passion for helping people in need. The club president, Sharmeen Maronesy, has devoted countless hours planning events, fundraisers and donation drives to benefit domestic violence victims, homeless youth and adults, as well as children with Down syndrome, Autism and terminal illnesses.
What motivated you to get involved with this organization?
The mission, the benefits and the people involved were what really inspired me to give my all to this organization. The events allow for members to gain experience working with diverse populations and really connect with those who they are serving. Countless opportunities presented and amazing people involved in the CFDSO are also major reasons that I, and many others, choose to become active members this organization.
What has been the highlight of your time in CFDSO?
I can easily say that involvement with the org itself has been the highlight of my college experience. One of my favorite CFDSO events is our annual Becky’s House Halloween Party. We held our 4th annual event this year for victims of domestic violence, specifically mothers and children. We hope to continue the tradition for all of the families that look forward to it each October.
When it comes to finding new members for your organization, what type of students are you looking for?
CFDSO members are both passionate and compassionate, as well as motivated, responsible, and positive. We are open to students of all majors and always welcome new members!
When are your meetings?
We hold two opportunities to attend each of our meetings. Those interested in attending meetings need only attend one in each set as they are duplicate meetings and the same information is provided at each. All meetings are held in ENS 216.
Does your organization have any events coming up?
We have teamed up with the Student California Teachers’ Association for their annual toy drive to benefit orphans in Tijuana, Mexico. We are accepting donations of clothing, school supplies and toys. Donation bins are located in EBA 259, EBA 403, and at the É«ÇéÊÓƵ Children’s Center
