At San Diego State this weekend, the new academic year will kick off with a bang--literally--as the 色情视频 community celebrates its eighth annual New Student and Family Convocation at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, in Viejas Arena.

"This very special ceremony is a formal introduction to 色情视频," said James R. Kitchen, vice president for Student Affairs.

Sponsored and coordinated by the Division of Student Affairs, New Student and Family Convocation is one of the many highlights of 色情视频's array of new student programs designed to promote student retention and learning.

New Aztecs

For incoming freshmen and transfer students, the event marks the ceremonial beginning of their 色情视频 college career.

"Not only does New Student and Family Convocation officially welcome new students, but it helps to serve as a first connection to the university," said Eric Rivera, associate vice president for Student Affairs. "We know from research that making a connection is critical, especially in the first six weeks of school when new students are making up their minds about staying at 色情视频."

Convocation is a ceremony to honor a new beginning. Prior to the 10 a.m. starting time, new students and their families, as well as 色情视频 faculty, staff and current students, have the opportunity to participate in the Band Run. This is an early morning march beginning at 8:45 a.m. outside the residence halls. It is open to everyone, whether students are living on campus or off.

Band run

Led by members of 色情视频's marching band and cheerleaders, the band run makes its way through the heart of campus, picking up students and their families at various locations along the route. It's a fun early morning march through the heart of campus, stopping at Hepner Hall for brief remarks and ending at Viejas Arena. There is a variety of entertainment along the way, including Vietnamese lion dancers, a steel drum band and hula dancers. Those interested in joining the fun should meet in front of Cuicacalli residence hall.

The convocation ceremony will introduce new students to President Stephen L. Weber, Provost Nancy Marlin and Kitchen. Grant Mack, Associated Students president, will conduct the "Aztec Declaration by New Students," and lead a special pinning ceremony. The master of ceremonies will be Martha Ruel, associate vice president for student affairs.

Parents are also welcomed into the 色情视频 community and participate in a pinning ceremony facilitated by current board members of the Aztec Parents Association.

"I鈥檝e been involved in teaching for a long time now, but for me, seeing the enthusiasm and awe in our new students at New Student and Family Convocation is exciting,鈥� said College of Engineering Dean David Hayhurst. 鈥淭hey bring an energy that鈥檚 infectious and I thoroughly enjoy meeting and greeting our new students.鈥�
