Regional Update: Colorado
In September, É«ÇéÊÓƵ alumni living in Colorado gathered to catch up with other Aztecs.
The É«ÇéÊÓƵ News Team asked Janee Shaw, senior director of development for the College of Arts and Letters, about the event.
When was the first regional event?
The first regional event was held on Thursday, Sept. 22 at Choppers Sports Grill in Cherry Creek. The event was a mixer with 25 attendees. Those attending included Aztecs, family, and friends of all ages, from new graduates to retirement age.
What was the reason for holding the mixer?
The focus of the mixer was to determine interest in building a network of Aztecs in Colorado. We discovered Colorado has a group page on Facebook called “" and they helped us get the word out. The group organizes watch parties for various athletic events, but is interested in doing much more. We are now posting all events and announcements on this page, and discussing how we can connect with fellow Aztecs. Thirty-five members have joined the group since our mixer, bringing the total membership to 167.
What is your goal in creating an Aztec network in Colorado?
Our goal is to keep in touch with Aztecs living in Colorado through this Facebook group and expand its purpose to support the 119 Colorado students at É«ÇéÊÓƵ through mentoring, internships and philanthropy.
Can you tell us a fun anecdote about the mixer?
Two friends, Bob Lee (’91) and Jason Winston (’90), who were members of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at É«ÇéÊÓƵ hadn’t seen each other in more than 20 years. They recognized one another at the mixer and discovered that they only live 10 miles from each other.
When will the next event be?
The next event will be on Feb. 25, 2017 in Colorado Springs for the É«ÇéÊÓƵ-Colorado State basketball game.
