Scholarships for High-Achieving STEM Students

Eighteen É«ÇéÊÓƵ students recently received scholarships from the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation.

Eighteen É«ÇéÊÓƵ students majoring in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) recently received scholarships from the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation (ARCS). This is the largest number of scholars É«ÇéÊÓƵ has produced since ARCS started providing scholarships to the university in 1989.
ARCS awards scholarships in fields such as bio-medicine, natural sciences, and engineering. The 18 scholars each received $7,500, totaling $135,000.
In addition to 10 new scholars for the 2017-2018 academic year, the foundation also funded scholarships for eight former É«ÇéÊÓƵ ARCS Scholars.
This year’s 18 student recipients and their areas of study are:

  • Liwen Deng - Biology
  • Sean Maddox - Chemistry
  • Paul Maier - Evolutionary biology
  • Brian Maniaci - Chemistry
  • Megan Monsanto - Biology
  • Megan Morris - Ecology
  • Erik Paulson - Chemistry
  • Colette Smirniotis - Computational science
  • Winston Stauffer - Biology
  • Pedro Torres - Biology
  • Adriana Trujillo - Biology
  • Janet Walker - Ecology
  • Melissa Ward - Ecology
  • Joi Weeks - Biology
  • Nicholas Williams - Chemistry

The San Diego chapter of ARCS is one of 16 chapters across the country dedicated to helping the best and brightest graduate and undergraduate students working toward degrees in the natural sciences, medicine and engineering.
Since its founding in 1958, the nonprofit, all-women volunteer organization has awarded more than $100 million to 9,600 ARCS Scholars in top-rated STEM programs at leading U.S. universities.
